Spirit Weak

The time has come for the most fun-filled week of the school year but this year there seemed to be just one small problem, the students were missing their school spirit. From wearing their cozy pajamas to dressing up in their best costumes, the students seemed to have no desire to participate in this annual event.

Why do so many students lack school spirit? “It's just not interesting; I simply don't have time” Maria Gonzalez claimed. Many students, like Maria, would prefer to spend their time on homework rather than spend it on deciding what neon shirt to wear. To them, school spirit is not on their priority list. “Our generation is so messed up, that school spirit is seen as too mainstream” proclaimed Jennifer Lopez. Students feel that participating in silly games is immature and somehow damage their “reputation” on the social status pyramid. This is what hinders most students to not get involved in the fun creative games held.

However there is a select portion of students who feel that participating in school events plays a major role in their four years of high school. “I dressed up because I thought it would be funny to be ‘Jesus’, besides it was spirit week. We should take advantage of the activities that are held.” Alex Gonzalez explained.

Nonetheless, students still believe that there is hope in fixing this depressing issue. More games, publicizing events, or even raffles could be the solution to end this misery. We as a student body must take pride in who we are. School may be seen as just a dull learning environment, but showing off your school spirit can make your high school years memorable. “Don’t just come to school, be a part of it, we’re only here for four years.” encouraged Gonzalez.

When will you be able to dress up in pajamas in public again? When will you be able to dress up in your favorite 80s outfit or become twins with your best friend? Simple events like these come once in a lifetime. One day you'll look back and wish you would have had more school spirit.
