L.A. High’s JPL team competed at Augustus Hopkin’s High

Los Angeles High School competed in the NASA-supported Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) at Augustus Hopkins High School on November 16, 2013. The Los Angeles High MESA brought 3 teams to compete - Team Sky High, Team Swag, and Team Rocket. Our school competed against 65 other teams from all over Los Angeles. Los Angeles High School has competed in JPL competitions each year. But, this was the largest number of competitors yet in JPL history.

JPL challenges change each year to encourage its competitors to think for themselves. For this year’s JPL competition, teams built a device to shoot a golf ball into a small box from one and a

half meters away. Not only did they have to make it into the box, but they also had to make it into the box the fastest.

“This year’s competition was one of the hardest,” said Antonio Aguilar.

Out of the 68 teams that competed, only about 25 teams were able to make the golf ball in the box. Mr. Gerardo Perla, the JPL advisor, said that he was very proud of all his teams. He said that each team had a great project and worked very hard on their projects.

“It was a great learning experience” said Mr. Perla when describing the JPL. He continued to say that JPL was a “good way to kick off our season” in reference to the next year’s projects. “It teaches students how to use the tools.”

The Blue & White, on behalf of L.A. High, would like to congratulate Team Swag on their success in the competition. The team made it all the way to finals, which were on December 6th, 2013 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Mr. Perla said that the team competed very well against strong competition. The Los Angeles High MESA club is now preparing for the U.S. First Robotics.
